A Novel Hybrid Polygeneration System Based on Biomass, Wind and Solar Energy for Micro-Scale Isolated Communities

The availability of freshwater and energy is a serious issue in remote islanded areas, especially at small scale, where there may not be the possibility to access grid and/or water distribution systems. In this context, polygeneration systems operating on basis local, renewable sources can an answer users’ demand for electricity, heating, cooling, domestic hot water. scope proposed paper was investigate, numerically, economic feasibility novel hybrid system powered by biomass, solar, wind micro-district households. consists biomass-fueled steam cycle, turbine, photovoltaic field coupled with thermal electrical storage, adsorption chiller, reverse osmosis desalination unit. also assisted LPG generator set running as backup. provides space heating energy, fresh 10 households located Pantelleria Island, Italy. modelled simulated through TRNSYS software realistic user demand. performance are assessed respect reference different scenarios, taking into account operation, connection grid, biomass tariffs. results show that achieves excellent primary saving all investigated savings more than 94% scenarios. Excluding any kind funding, case new investment system, simple payback oscillates between 7 12 years, showing developed alternative fairly valid traditional solutions.
